Dr. Paul Davis

DR. PAUL DAVIS - president & Challenge founder

Dr. Davis received his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College of Human Performance. A former firefighter/paramedic, he is a renowned expert witness on the subject of physical fitness and employment standards in the public safety sector. His ground-breaking research was the basis for the creation of the Firefighter Combat Challenge.

Rob Alesbury

ROB ALESBURY - vice-president & general manager

Rob’s primary Firefighter Combat Challenge focus is on planning the national travel schedule by developing state and local partnerships that provide hosting support for the Challenge as well as recognition of the state and local community’s fire/rescue heroes/heroines – encouraging a lifelong commitment to physical fitness, health and wellness throughout the fire/rescue industry – all in support of public safety.

Chuck Bens

RON BECKMAN - operations manager

Ron is a 22 year professional firefighter and respected Challenge veteran, who lives with his wife Bernice in Colorado. Ron has a background in management, various injury prevention and safety programs, and is very well rounded in the world of emergency response with an extensive background in instructional development and training for emergency responders over a 30 year period. Ron is returning to the Challenge this season as our operations manager and course official.

Daniel Pace

DANIEL PACE - information specialist/registrar

Daniel has been a part of the Road Crew since 1996. Daniel handles all Challenge registration and records. He is affectionately known as the "brains of the operation". If you have a question about the Challenge, Daniel can most likely answer it. He can be found in the new Challenge Operation Center during competitions.

Michael DeGrandpre


Michael is from Maine, but currently resides in Washington, D.C. As well as being the on staff photographer, he also deals with most of the creative projects associated with the Challenge and behind the scenes work for planning Worlds.

Mike Word

MIKE WORD - announcer

Mike provides the narration for the Challenge. His talent is in keeping the attention of the audience, while announcing runs, and keeping the pace of the event. Mike is from Mississippi, and works at the Mississippi State Fire Academy.

Roger Shuttlesworth

ROGER SHUTTLESWORTH - course relocation specialist & course official

Roger retired in 2011 from Fort Martin Power Station where he worked as the station Fire Chief and Maintenance Supervisor. He was a member of the Fire and Rescue Brigade for 32 Years, the last 15 years as the Chief. Roger is currently is the Fire Chief of the Triune Halleck Volunteer Fire Department, Deputy Chief of the Monongalia County Hazardous Materials Response Team and the Assistant Chief of the Monongalia County Wild land Response Team.  Roger has volunteered as a Fire Fighter since 1977. Roger currently works part-time as a contractor with the Marion County Rescue Squad as an EMTB, and lives with his wife Belinda reside near Morgantown West Virginia.

Belinda Shuttlesworth

BELINDA SHUTTLESWORTH - registration aid & merchandise customer service

Belinda became a firefighter with Triune Halleck VFD in 2004 and started with the FFCC in 2005. She is a Pro-Board FF 2, and holds 5 Pro-Board Technician Certificates in Hazmat, Extrication, Ropes, Confined Space, & Swiftwater. She is also a WVSSAC & USATF Track & Field Official. She is an Office Manager in the 9-5 world, plays with creating jewelry, and is proud to be called grandma.

Todd Shelton

TODD SHELTON - course relocation specialist & course official

Todd Shelton has spent the last three decades in breathtaking Pagosa Springs, CO. The last six with his best friend and wife, Melissa. Together they enjoy finding the adventure in each new day. He loves the outdoors,hunting, Jeeping, fly fishing, and farming. He has a passion for designing and building new things and has a desire to explore renewable energy. Todd works on the course as an official, and as one of our drivers on the road.

Duane Breman

DUANE BREMAN - course relocation specialist, Kids' Challenge, & course official

Duane originally from California but has chosen beautiful Pagosa Springs Co. to call home over the last 20 years. His interest include dirtbikes, hunting, boating, snowboarding and in general spending time in the outdoors. Traveling to many different locations for competitions is nothing new to him. During the last decade most of his free time has been spent traveling to different tracks with his wife and 2 sons as they compete in various Arenacross, Supercross, and Motorcross races across the U.S. When the kids were younger he would also coach many of the little league teams. Now that his kids are in high school he is looking forward to working with the younger kids again during the Kids' Challenge.

Mike Riley

MIKE RILEY - Marketing, Communications, Sales and Logistics

Mike coordinates the FCC social media, marketing and promotional efforts. He is a photographer and videographer on the road as well as the substitute announcer. Before joining The Challenge he was a Broadcaster for Salisbury University where he covered Men's and Women's varsity athletics, including the NCAA D3 Playoffs. Mike currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland and in his free time he enjoys playing ice hockey.

Kirk Tanner

KIRK TANNER - course relocation specialist & course official

Married to my wife, Rhonda since 1989. I have 3 boys who eat like 6. We reside in Valley Springs, California. I owned a landscape company before making a mid-life career change to the fire service in 1998. I currently work as an engineer for East Contra Costa Fire. I started competing in the Challenge in 1999. Over the years I transitioned from competitor to course worker.

John Tillett

JOHN TILLETT - course relocation specialist & course official

John has been involved with the Challenge for years as a course official, driver, and manufacturer of many of the props associated with the Challenge. He lives with his wife, in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Ron Dove

RON DOVE - course relocation specialist & course official

Ron is a native of Montana, where he lives with his wife of 29 years, Lori in Superior. He loves to hunt, fish, snowmobile, and spend time with his grandsons, Roper and Sawyer. For the last 35 years he has been doing his dream job of driving truck. He is a volunteer for the Mineral County Search and Rescue and is certified in Swift Water Rescue, Boat Handling, and Avalanche Rescue and also works in the winters as a plow driver. Ron is on the 2013 Tour as one of our Course Relocation Specialist, and drives the Kenworth.

Eugene McPeek

EUGENE McPEEK - course official

Eugene is working in the emeregncy response profession and has over 30 years experience. Sergeant Major McPeek retired from the United States Marine Corps after a 30 year career (Active/Reserve). Eugene lives with his wife of 30 years, Laurie, in Albuquerque New Mexico. He is returning to the Challenge this season as a course official and is a former top award winner in the Chief's Division in the Challenge

Brent Davis

BRENT DAVIS - course official

Brent Davis is a current member of the Montgomery County Fire Department, and a course official for the Challenge.


KAMIL SAFOGLU - international consultant

Kamıl joined the Ocean City (Maryland) Volunteer Fire company in 1993, and is founder of the East Coast Rescue Relief Team in 1999. Between The United States and Turkey, Kamıl has put together earthquake disaster relief teams, as well as being an active member of the Red Cross in both countries, respectively. A former competitor with the Challenge, he now enjoys a fit lifestyle, and is working to bring the Challenge to Turkey, to allow international competitors to enjoy the same physical competition he did in the early 00s.
