World Challenge: Wild Card Eliminations

For competitors who have not earned a bye (see website for all the bye details), the Wild Card Eliminations on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will identify who will advance into the Championship Round. The advancing teams and individuals will be announced at the Lion’s Den Reception, Thursday evening at the Plaza Hotel. At conclusion of the ceremony, RSVP for practice times will be allocated.

Registration Matters

Everyone attending must register on line- Otherwise, we have no way of knowing if you’re attending. Teams that have won a bye are “comp’d” their registration. However, if you wish a practice run on any of the Wild Card days, you must pay for each of the heats in which you race. And, you must register for each category in which you are competing. For example, if you wish to be considered in multiple categories, e.g.: Open, Over 40, then you have to indicate your eligibility and pay your registration fee for each competition category. Senior Citizens, (over 60) are free, but limited to the Tandem category.

Multiple Registrations

You may register for each of the 3 days, based upon space available. If eligible competitors can not obtain a slot because available runs are over-subscribed, we will ask that you vacate one or more of your slots to make room.

Order of Runs

We will start each Wild Card days with the Individuals (and teams). Then we will run the Tandems and finish with the Relays. The number of race slots per day is nominally 200. We will close off a Wild Card day when the slots are filled.

Check-in

Everyone must Check-in. This is the second, administrative part of the competition. This is how we know that you actually are in-town. The Check-in takes place for every race day and starts on Monday for Tuesday’s event- and so forth for each of the Wild Card days. The FCC Check-in Station is located adjacent to the Tower, on the Red side of the course. It will open at 0700 each day of the Wild Cards. Everyone must check-in- not just the team captain.

Head Shots

We are updating our photo library. Your photo will be taken when you check-in. Also, you will carefully review all of your information before leaving the Check-in area.

Competitor Goody Bags

Upon successful completion of the Check-in, you will be issued a card with your tee shirt size. This card can be redeemed for your Goody Bag that is available for pickup at the Combat Wear store, operating out of our red tractor-trailer. Treat this card as though it were cash- if you lose it, there will be no replacement.

Tandems

Note the Competitor Schedule: Tandem Championships take place Saturday morning. The benefits of this time slot should be self-evident. We are able to allow competitors a respite between the last two-days’ events and finish the competition at a reasonable hour.

Run Order

We will make every effort to start the competition promptly. There are no opening ceremonies during the Wild Card competition. Check-in early and show up on time. Preference will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.

Poker Tournament

The 2nd Annual Firefighter Poker Championship will be held at 1700hrs Monday, Nov 10th at Binions. Registration will take place on site. One-hundred individuals are necessary to create the tournament. Civilians may enter if we fail to fill all the available chairs. Cash prizes are awarded to the top 3 players. The entrance fee is $100. This event is managed by 1-800 Board-up, a sponsor with considerable experience in running firefighter poker tournaments all over the country.

Another Way to Save a Life

This year, we will provide our competitors with a very tangible way of saving a life- be a bone marrow donor. Just a couple of seconds can help us find a match for kids who badly need a match. One-stop in the Check-in Kiosk will do the trick.

Competitor Staging Area

We are carving out a large, sequestered area on 3rd Street dedicated to Competitors. While we don’t have sufficient room for camping out under your personal pop-up tents, you can store your gear and listen to your iPod while you’re awaiting your number to be called. We will only have room for 10 competitors at a time in the Scott Staging Area. Speakers will carry the play-by-play so you’ll know where we are in the order. Please promptly show up at the check-in gate behind the tower when your number is called. Failure to show is a disqualification.

The Keiser AirPort

Keiser Sports Health will outfit a full gym with warm-up bikes and cable resistive equipment. Take the Keiser Power Test for valuable information on your Challenge Readiness Quotient. The Gym will be opened 12 hours per day and is only accessible to Firefighter Combat Challenge competitors.

Rehab and Aid Station

The host department (Las Vegas FD) does not provide athletic training support. They are there for true, medical emergencies. Please do not request an assortment of pharmaceuticals or other amenities that can be purchased at the local CVS. Oxygen is considered a drug in Nevada. If you’re impaired, then you shouldn’t be competing. Otherwise, you’re looking for a placebo effect. Get over it.

Awards Ceremonies

We will hold our Scott Awards Ceremony on the 3rd Street dais immediately following each of the last two day’s events. A reception will take place and a cash bar is accessible to all. Hand stamps will be required to gain entry to the course celebrations.

NFPA Compliant Gear

Just a reminder that we will be checking gear to ensure compliance with NPFA 1971. Your gear must have a label saying that it is compliant with the NFPA specifications in effect at the time of manufacture.

Information Kiosk

The Check-in Kiosk behind the tower will be manned 1 hour before and :30 minutes after each of the first three days’ competitions. We will be there 2 hours before the Championship rounds on Friday and Saturday.

Receptions

We will have a meet and greet, no-host reception Monday night. Wednesday Night: The Grand National Champions will be recognized in a reception sponsored by Globe Footwear. Free boots to the lucky winners of the draw.

Lion’s Den Dinner

Thursday evening, we will hold the 10th Annual Lion’s Den Induction Ceremony at the Plaza (with dinner) and we will announce the finalists who will advance to the final day’s competitions. Varsity jackets will be distributed along with the other bling and a group photo will be taken. Activities start at 1800. This year’s inductees are posted on the website. Please RSVP is you are a 2008 Inductee.

Globe Footwear Trial Program

We will have the Globe Boot checkout located in the Competitor Staging Area. Same deal as always: leave your license for a pair of boots. Don’t come too early. We need to share.

Schedule of Events

Look for additional information on the website. We will have posters on site at the venue as well as on the video monitors. A special program featuring all the activities will be printed and included in your goody bag.

Dehydration Issues

Historically, competitors forget that Las Vegas is high desert with very low humidity. If you couple these factors with ANY alcohol consumption you’re putting yourself at risk for performance problems. Think carefully about how you plan on maintaining proper hydration.
